* Transformational Leaders deliver great results by sharing knowledge and facilitate communications with others. They know that being effective is NOT only ‘what they know’, but ‘what they observe’. It’s NOT only what they observe, but ‘how well they listen’. And most important, it’s NOT how well they listen, but ‘how well they understand’. (Reference: “What Great Leaders (Should) Know” By Dr Robert Edmonson).
* Insightful leaders build relationships through effective ‘transformational communication’: creating new mental frameworks to influence thinking, change behavior and to transform individuals (staff) into thinking and performing like leaders, not followers. The goal is to help staff to uncover where they are now, where they want to go, identify fears, determine what motivates them, and explore personal barriers to success and how to achieve their personal and professional goals.
* Power of Praise. Great leaders give praise sincerely and from the heart, not contrived to manipulate others, and is offered to encourage, reinforce performance, sometimes ‘publicly’, and is ‘very specific’.
* Great leaders build trust, that is the cores of credibility. Trust is the foundation of coaching relationship that involves the 3 elements of “Sphere of Trust”: Presence, Respect, Relationship:
o Presence: Being there in mind, body and spirit, listening actively to what is being said as well as paying attention to non-verbal clues to what is not said. Showing flexibility during conversations “Dance of Communication”.
o Respect: Showing respect and confidentiality.
o Relationship: Building rapport, showing empathy (seek to understand before being understood) in a non-judgmental way, “up mouth, not down” (smiling is powerful!).
The motive that best builds credibility and trust is when you care about the people that you’re leading, and they know you care about them. Trust is strengthened by how you act. Results are what convert the cynics. Staff loyalty, commitment, energy, productivity, ultimate financial performance and other factors are directly linked to credibility.
* Leading with Humor. Humor is a powerful tool to help enhance relationship. It helps to motivate, create an environment of calmness, support, receptiveness and increase mental clarity.
